- What Is Asphalt?
Some people call it blacktop, some call it tarmac, others call it macadam. Whatever you call it's known to the industry experts as HMA - or Hot Mix Asphalt.
Hot Mix Asphalt really only has two ingredients. The first is called aggregate (crushed stone, gravel and sand) and the second is Asphalt Cement. The first component comprises nearly 95% of the total weight of the HMA product, with the second only making up a mere 5%. Add heat, mix the two componets together and you have Hot Mix Asphalt - simple.
- What Are The (If Any) Health Risks Associated With Hot Mix Asphalt?
The biggest threat of HMA is burns caused by splattering during the application process. If There are no known health risks associated with HMA, as reported by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Workers are on occasion burned during the application of the HMA if it is allowed to splatter during the application process. When hot HMA touches skin, it will frequently cause a second degree (sometimes third) burns. When we apply it we always wear protective clothing and ensure that we carefully montior the HMA as it cools. This prevents harm to the surrounding plants and animals as well as prevents any fires from starting.
- What Is A Perpetual Pavement Construction?
Perpetual Pavement Construction is a method of constructing pavement so that only the top layer wears and tears (so to speak). This layer can then be removed and replaced every 15-20 years, saving both time and money over the lifecycle of the pavement.
- Can And Does Asphalt Get Recycled?
ABSOLUTELY! Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is just one of the many ways that our industry can help the enviroment. While we dont use RAP on every job, we certainly do use it when appropriate and try to recommend it when ever possible.
