"...I found what I thought was a great deal on the repavement of our asphalt parking lot. It was such a good deal that I actually shopped around a bit, and got a couple more bids. Each new bid I got was more expensive and was going to take longer to do (both red flags I wished I would have seen). I was so proud that this company I chose was nearly 50% less than all the rest of the bids and 75% less than one of the companies my associate recommend me to.
I felt a twinge of concern when the salesman asked me to put up 2/3rds of the project cost up front, but he said it was standard procedure. I didn't know any better so I approved the check and waited. After nearly 2 weeks had passed, (including two days past the agreed upon start of the project) I phoned the salesman ... no awnser. I called the company... disconnected phone number. I checked the website ..."Domain Under Construction".
I never saw that salesman again, and nearly lost my job because I wasn't more careful. I ended up going to the company that offered a bid nearly 75% higher, because they only required 10% down. The end result was fantastic, but to this day, I wish I had some way of knowing what to watch out for... it would have saved me $35,000.00 and weeks of egg on my face."
